Why marketers are returning to traditional advertising

In recent years, marketing advice seems to have pointed in just one direction: go digital with targeted online and social media ads. And while online channels still matter a great deal, many marketers are quietly realising somtimes a more balanced and nuanced approach may be needed. While click-through rates are falling, audiences are harder to hold, and ads are easier than ever to ignore, is the pendulum swinging back towards other methods?

Put simply, yes! Traditional advertising is once again seeing itself back at the forefront of modern marketing plans. Not as a replacement for digital, but to complement it, as a powerful way to restore visibility, trust and real-world presence. Formats like billboards, posters and outdoor installations are proving that being seen still counts – especially when attention online is stretched thin.

In this guide, we explore what traditional advertising really means today, whether it’s still effective, and why out-of-home advertising (OOH) is playing a growing role in campaigns that want impact beyond the screen.

Why marketers are returning to traditional advertising

Traditional advertising is exactly what it sounds like. Marketing channels that exist outside of the digital world. This is to say, advertising focusing on established mediums including television, radio, print media such as newspapers and magazines, direct mail, and, of course, outdoor advertising.

As the oldest of all of these mediums, out-of-home advertising is arguably one of the most visible forms of traditional advertising. It covers formats like roadside billboards, transport ads, bus shelters, retail parks and large digital screens in public spaces. These ads reach people as they commute, shop, travel and move through towns and cities.

Unlike online ads, traditional advertising doesn’t rely on clicks, cookies, social media preferences or algorithms. Instead, it focuses on consistent exposure in the real world. When people pass the same billboard every day, the message becomes familiar – and familiarity builds trust. Indeed, research shows that outdoor advertising enjoys higher consumer trust than many other ad formats, with around 55% of adults saying they trust outdoor ads, a stronger figure than search and banner ads.

Modern traditional advertising has also evolved. Digital OOH screens now allow brands to update creatives in real time, run multiple messages and align outdoor activity with online campaigns.

Is traditional advertising still effective?

Put simply – absolutely it is! And the data supports this.

Take the UK OOH market as an example. In 2024, it reached a record £1.4 billion in revenue, showing consistent growth even as other media channels face increasing challenges. This demonstrates the resilience of outdoor advertising and its continued value for brands.

Part of OOH’s strength comes from sheer reach. Research indicates that 98% of UK adults see at least one out-of-home advert every week, making it one of the most widely viewed channels in the country. For marketers, that kind of consistent visibility is hard to achieve online without spending significant budgets.

Can OOH advertising be more effective than digital methods?

It’s absolutely the case that in today’s marketplace, digital marketing is essential. For this reason, we’d never suggest dismissing it totally. Instead, we often recommend that traditional OOH methods are used alongside your brand’s digital efforts in a synergised marketing strategy. That being said, in some situations, data does suggest OOH could be more effective when implemented correctly.

Interestingly, for example, one study from Clear Channel Outdoor and Kantar, comparing advertising channels found that OOH can deliver an average ad awareness lift of 13.3%, compared with just 3.9% for digital advertising. This highlights how physical presence in the real world can often be more memorable than ads people scroll past or block online.

The key difference is attention. Digital ads are easy to skip, block or ignore. Outdoor ads, by contrast, are part of the environment. They don’t interrupt content – they are the content people see while going about their day.

That said, as touched on above, it doesn’t have to be an either/or choice. The most effective campaigns combine OOH and digital. Outdoor ads build awareness and trust, while digital channels capture follow-up engagement and drive action. Together, they create a campaign that reaches people both in the real world and online.

What are the benefits of traditional advertising ?

  1. Broad, real-world reach

As discussed, the major benefit of traditional outdoor advertising is reach. Practically, anyone who leaves their home experiences it in some capacity. Indeed, with nearly all UK adults seeing OOH ads weekly, it offers consistent exposure across age groups and lifestyles. This makes it especially valuable for brands that want scale, not just narrow targeting.

  1. High visibility and recall

Put simply, traditional ads are harder to ignore. Large formats, strong visuals and repeated exposure help messages stick. As mentioned above, research consistently shows that OOH is one of the strongest channels for brand recall, particularly when used alongside other media. Seeing the same message daily on a commute builds familiarity far more effectively than a one-off online impression.

  1. Drives online action and complements digital campaigns

There is a common misconception in marketing that a brand needs to choose between traditional and digital marketing, based on what is best suited to their industry. This is simply not the case. OOH doesn’t just build awareness – it prompts action. Studies show that 46% of consumers search for a brand online after seeing an outdoor ad, and 26% go on to visit the brand’s website. This makes outdoor advertising a powerful starting point for the customer journey, however, it also highlights why these two distinct advertising strategies should be used together for best results.

The bottom line is that traditional advertising works best when it supports digital activity. Outdoor ads create recognition, while online channels handle conversion. When people recognise a brand they’ve seen in the real world, they’re more likely to trust it online.

Digital OOH formats also allow brands to align messaging with time of day, location or live data – combining flexibility with physical presence.
